# Tuning-In & Sounding Outwards
*Write, record, and upload a song to the Jukebox, songs.schoolofsong.org, based on this prompt before Saturday’s song-share. The most important part of the assignment is to finish a song by Saturday — if any instruction gets in the way of finishing, ignore it.*
*Listen to and comment on at least 3 other songs in the Jukebox. Introduce yourself on the `#introductions` Discord channel (instructions to join on schoolofsong.org/daniel).*
## Part 1 — Tuning-In
Early this week, spend 5-10 minutes deliberately attending to sounds you normally ignore. If you’re able, take a short sound-walk on a familiar route.
Keep a “tuning-log” of your most interesting observations — *sound source / quick description / one-line impression*. Try to notice the following: texture (grainy/smooth), distance (near/far), density (busy/sparse), rhythm (periodic/droning). If you can, make a recording / voice memo of some of these sounds.
The goal here is to experience **deep listening** and tune in to the audible landscape of reality.
## Part 2 — Sounding Outwards
> [!note] Pick one entry from your tuning log.
If you recorded it, load that file into your recording software / digital audio workstation (DAW). Try looping it, chopping it up, adding effects, pitching it up or down, turning it into an instrument, etc. Let this track be the centerpiece that you react to, layer upon, or recontextualize as you see fit.
Build outwards from this centerpiece. Channel [the fool](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fool_\(tarot_card\)) – follow your nose, be open and carefree, and take big strides.
If you didn’t record anything during part 1 or prefer not to work in a DAW, choose an entry from your tuning-log and find a different way to represent or interact with it. For example, you could: recreate a sound or texture using your instrument, draw lyrical material from your environment, or improvise alongside your chosen environment/element in real time.
